Fat Mango has secretly been stalking Kate Greenwood's pop of colour on their newsfeed for months. This is her story, which as makers and small business owners, is VERY relatable. Here is Kate's journey so far.
I'm a wife to Gus and a mum to 2 little people Jack and Olivia and we live in Molong, central NSW. I possess a genuine love of people, I love meeting new people, understanding what makes them tick and most importantly I love making people happy! I'm determined and passionate, I don't suffer fools very well and I always like to give 100%, I'm not good at mediocracy. This can be good and bad, at times I am my own worst critic! I'm most happy when others around me are happy, that brings me much joy and that's my measurement of success!
I started Greenwood Designs just over 3 years ago on a bit of a whim, I've always been creative and enjoyed getting crafty but never thought that I would be still doing this 3 years down the track. At the time I was helping my girlfriend out with her business at markets and had an idea of making earrings out of polymer clay, she egged me on to have a go and share a stall with her, so I did, I made 100 pairs of earrings in all sorts of colours and went along to the market. I thought to myself if I could sell 20 pairs I would be really stoked, well to my surprise/delight, I sold 70 pairs in 3 hours. Wow, was an understatement, maybe people liked these and maybe I was onto something and so it evolved from there, to necklaces, key rings, bracelets and a few pieces for the little ladies. I now have just over 25 stockist in NSW, VIC, QLD and SA, which I'm delighted about.
It's been a whirlwind, one that I've really enjoyed and before Christmas I resigned from my part time banking role to pursuit my little whim in its entirety. It's a bit scary, but exciting at the same time, I'm pumped for what 2016 will bring.
Look I'm not going to lie, it's been very hectic juggling it all, I've certainly stumbled at times, but busting myself over the last couple of years has allowed me to be able to resign from my job and look to spend more time on Greenwood Designs but most importantly more time with my little people, I'm hoping to regain a bit more of a balance in 2016.
My earrings are my fav product, I don't think a day has gone by where I have not worn my earrings since, I just love how I can match them to any outfit, I do have way too many and I am often caught raiding more, much to my husbands dismay, he's regularly saying 'don't you already have a pink pair?' Me 'yes, but not in this tone honey!' They just don't get it at times, ha ha!
It's so rewarding and gives me an enormous buzz seeing people wear my creations, it makes be so happy and really motivates me day to day to keep going. The other thing that's great about having you own business is that it's up to you and only you, you reap what you put in and at the end of the day you're calling the shots and in charge of your own journey!
The worst things would be when you see or hear of local people copying your designs, polymer clay is a fantastic medium and there is a massive market, but finding your point of difference is hard and something I think about everyday. At times switching off from your own business can be hard, but 95% of the time I would say I love what I do, and I pretty happy with that stat!
Yes (I have thought about giving up), but only momentarily, probably on one of the 5% crappy days!
My mum was and is my inspiration when it comes to running a business from home with young kids, she did it when my sister and I were young, she was always around and always available when we needed her. She worked really hard, while we were at school during the days and often late into the night. Although this is important, she always had something for her, her own business, an interest and an income source, all of which is terribly important to me! It hasn't been easy getting to this point, but hopefully it will all pay off and I can continue to grow my business from home while growing and nurturing our lIttle people.
